We are anesthesiology leaders working together to enhance patient safety, quality of care, and education in Non-Operating Room Anesthesia through collaboration across institutions and departments.

WHAT WE DO

Non-operating Room Anesthesia (NORA) constitutes 25-30% of anesthesia cases and increases every year.

The growth in NORA is due to multiple factors, including improving technology increasing the success of less invasive procedures at treating disease.

In addition, patient preference for shorter recovery times make these procedures increasingly attractive to the public when compared to surgical intervention.

Furthermore, patients may request an anesthesia professional care for them during less invasive procedures to ensure they receive the highest possible standard of care with the least amount of discomfort.

Patients undergoing NORA interventions range from infants to the elderly, and from the healthy to those on mechanical assist devices. There is a wide variety of in-patient and out-patient procedures that are included in NORA.

Anesthesiology collaborates with the following specialties in NORA:

  • Cardiology
  • Dentistry and Oral Surgery
  • Dermatology
  • Diagnostic Radiology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Interventional Radiology
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Psychiatry
  • Pulmonology
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Reproductive Endocrinology
  • Palliative Medicine

OUR PURPOSE

The purpose of NORA society is to maintain a community of practice of NORA leaders across the country. We meet monthly via Zoom to share dilemmas, solutions, resources, and ideas. We support each other as we approach patients, procedural collaborators, our departments, and hospital leadership with new proposals. We represent both academic and private practice hospital settings all over the United States, with expertise ranging from pediatric to cardiac anesthesia.
